November 28, 2011Leftovers + Our First Music Video!Howdy hey! In hopes that, by now, you've polished off most of the leftovers but are still brimming with happy thoughts and memories with the ol' friends and fam, we wish you all a happy yet belated Thanksgiving. We had a great one over here - good mix of food, family and frisbee. Loved every minute. All that, but we're also pretty stoked to share our first ever music video with y'all - for "Cuckoo Bird," off our album. Filmed and directed by a super cool guy, Phillip Wachter of Harrisonburg, VA, we shot it over two happy days in Elk Creek, where the old schoolhouse - the same place Grayson County Fiddler's Convention is held every June - ended up being the perfect setting for most of the shoot.Watch the vid here and, like your favorite cranberry sauce, spread it all around (all you Twitter-tweeters get busy). And check out more of what Phillip is up to here._____________________________________________________________________

November 20, 2011Tales From the Parking Lot: Vol. 1 | Summer StuffGood people, co-conspirators, and fellow avocado lovers! It's us again, writing to you from the insulated walls of a lovely suburban home in Longwood, FL. Seems like it's about time to fill y'all in on what's been happening in our busy lives. After shooting out in mid-May, we started trekking around VA and WV - stopping in Elk Creek to film a music video (more on that soon enough) before heading into Yankee country. After a detour for some buffalo wings in Buffalo, NY we pressed on into the wild north country of Ontario, Canada in the whims of June. We then hopped about, playing shows, stopping some to grab at precious time with friends, and filling our summer with lots and lots of you all. Along the way was everything from Clifftop (our haven for 10 straight days of old-time - and where we happened to place in the Neo-Trad band contest), new stops in Michigan (swimming in lakes and stopping in Ann Arbor, Holland, and Kalamazoo - what a lovely state) and Bristol Rhythm & Roots, to Shakori Hills (silent films, bus jams and cots compliments of Mike Hansen), Music City Roots (with Spirit Family Reunion), and a great time at Skipper's Smokehouse with the legendary Ralph Stanley. Our last stop was Louisiana. It was our inaugural trip out to cajun country, and we had awesome times to be sure. New Orleans - soaking up NOLA culture, people, and food, playing music and dancing on their streets and in their bars. And then again in Lafayette - Blackpot Festival, ending our tour with family, food and music and reminding ourselves why we do the crazy things we do. Finally, just a few short weeks ago we rolled back across the palmetto-frocked border of Georgia and Florida on I-75 to arrive home. There were two more festivals on the docket before we really quieted down, and we were blown away and humbled by your welcoming us back home at both Riverhawk and Orlando Calling. And now for the fun stuff. What could probably be called the dessert section of this newsletter. Enjoy:Best on-the-road listening: Gillian Welch's Harrow & the Harvest, Wilco's Mermaid Avenue, John Prine, Low Anthem, The Horseflies, Emmylou Harris' 'Red Dirt Girl', The Crooked Jades, Neil YoungBest food stops: Verti Mart (New Orleans), Ithaca Bakery (Ithaca), Fleetwood Diner (Ann Arbor), Syros Greek (Youngstown)Best hammock spots: mature poison ivy at Rockbridge, graveyard in Indiana, church's playset in the middle of a cornfield also in IndianaTour quotes:- "I gotta find Bubba!" - Forrest Gump- "I love all you girls' with your matching knit hats." - Gailanne (to a table of 2 girls...and a guy)- "..A five-star dive bar." - UrbanSpoon.com (of Silver Swan Tavern in Cuyahoga Falls, OH)Random stories:- While in Toronto for NXNE we hung out in a 7-11 with The Black Keys' Patrick Carney- During our Friday night set at Grey Fox, the power went out and everything went dark. But Grey Fox fans stepped up and for the next hour and a half we jammed out unplugged - completely lit by flashlights, cellphones, and candles. Even when the stage hands were ready to turn the lights and power back on, the crowd started booing the lights and we kept on in the dark. It was a highlight.- Played for a national sandcastle competitionRead on down for a bit of what's up next for the band, including a smattering about the news on our next album.Lastly, a special thanks to everyone who has come out to sing, dance, eat, and party with us and for our growing list of friends who all too often allow us to crash on floors, beds and couches. Thanks also to the handful of parks and parking lots we camped out in who didn't even know we were there. You're all rad.Shake and bake,Team Jubal_______________ NEWS IMAs - People's Choice Award for "Best Album Art"Earlier this year, you might have heard about our album winning the "Album Art" category at the Independent Music Awards. We were also nominated for "Best Americana Album." Gailanne wins Grand Master Guru Wizard AwardBut seriously. While at IBMA this year, Gailanne competed in the fiddle contest and won the Grand Master Traditional Fiddle Championship. Dude."Play somethin' ya know Gaiyyy-len!" - Matt Kinman_______________ NEXT Album #2The gears are most definitely in motion for another album. Now that we'll be settling back into home life for a couple months, we're looking forward to finding somewhere to hole up and some time to write and record. We'll be finding a producer to team up with and getting some new material together (some of which you might have started hearing us try out at some shows) and we're confident this album will be a good snapshot for where we've been the past year and where we'll be headed. Trying things out and expanding our creative horizons - pretty excited to let you guys hear what we come up with. Spring 2012Festivals are basically our favorite.
